William H. Peterson, Sr. 81 of Stanley, died Saturday,
June 17, 2017 at his home under the care of his loving
wife, children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren.   He was born on December 10, 1935
the son of the late Adolph and Elizabeth (Brunner)
Peterson. Bill grew up in Stanley and graduated from
Stanley High School. On September 1, 1954 he
married Audrey Langiewicz at St. Mary’s Catholic
Church in Stanley.  Bill and Audrey have been
members of St. Mary’s, St. Joseph’s in Boyd, and All
Saints Catholic Parish in Stanley.
Bill started out his business career at the Stanley
Corporation working as a machinist and eventually
became Plant Manager.  He and Dominic Reali
became business partners and purchased the Lotz
company in Boyd, Wisconsin where Bill was the Plant
Manager.  In 1983 Bill followed his dream and
purchased the Skelly Station in Stanley from Fred
Seefeldt.  This was the beginning of Stanley Oil & Gas
Company where Bill and Audrey worked tirelessly
providing many services to the surrounding
communities.  Bill was proud of having the first
touchless carwash in the Stanley area.
Bill researched various motel chains and eventually
built the Super 8 Motel in 1999 to ensure those
coming to Stanley had a warm and friendly place to
stay.  The Stanley Super 8 Motel won numerous
awards throughout the years under Bill’s
management.
He was instrumental in various business activities in
Stanley by his efforts with the Stanley Prison, Ace
Ethanol, relocation of the Stanley Hospital, and
refurbishing the Stanley Depot and Soo Line Park.
Bill was an active member of many civic organizations
including:  Knights of Columbus, Jaycees, FFA Alumni,
Stanley Chamber of Commerce, Victory Memorial
Hospital Board, and the Stanley Lions Club along with
many others.
The Stanley Rodeo was near and dear to his heart; he
had the vision of providing a family oriented event
where the proceeds would be kept in the community to
benefit various projects.  He worked endlessly
preparing the rodeo grounds; building bleachers;
mowing; grading the arena; and making Stanley’s
rodeo one of the premier events on the rodeo circuit.
Bill could always be found driving in his Cadillac with
silver horns collecting donations and securing
sponsors for various events including:  The Stanley
Rodeo; Stanley Truck Pull; Ice Race; Watermelon
Festival; Christmas Toys for Tots; Stanley Theater
Free Shows; Christmas sleigh rides by his brother Bob
Peterson; along with many others too numerous to
mention.
Bill’s proudest moments were with his grandchildren
and great grandchildren.  He was at every school and
sporting event, concert or play that he could.  His face
lit up when they stopped to visit.  His last moments
were spent surrounded by them and easing their pain
as he made his final journey.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Audrey, his
children, Judy (Tom) Smith, Brian (Beth) Peterson and
Paul (Joan) Peterson all of Stanley, William (Judy)
